Military spouses lose coverage at separation too (FSGLI explained)

FSGLI ends on the same clock as SGLI — but spouses cannot convert to VGLI. Here is the narrower exit door.

Everyone talks about the service member's SGLI window. Almost nobody mentions this: your spouse's coverage is on the same clock — and their conversion rules are different, shorter in practical terms, and far less forgiving.

Family SGLI — FSGLI — covers spouses of service members with full-time SGLI, up to one hundred thousand dollars, at premiums that come straight out of the member's pay. Most families barely notice it exists, which is exactly the problem: coverage you never noticed is coverage you never plan to replace.

How it ends

Here's the mechanism. FSGLI terminates one hundred twenty days after the member separates — same window as SGLI. But the exit door is different: a spouse can't convert to VGLI. VGLI is for the veteran only. The spouse's option is converting to a permanent commercial policy with a participating company within that window, without proof of good health — or replacing coverage on the open market with full underwriting.

Why this matters more than it sounds

Think about who this hits hardest: a spouse who developed health conditions during the service years. The veteran has VGLI as a no-questions safety net. The spouse's no-questions option is narrower, less publicized, and gone at day one-twenty-one. Military families plan the veteran's transition meticulously and let the spouse's coverage quietly evaporate — and statistically, the spouse's income and caregiving role is often what actually holds the household together during transition.

Localize

Across Central Texas — veterans across the region — transition briefings cover the member's checklist. I have never once heard a spouse's FSGLI conversion window mentioned at one. That's not a criticism of the briefers. It's the reason this video exists.

Empower

The move: during out-processing, run two coverage timelines, not one. For the member — VGLI versus private, as covered earlier in this series. For the spouse — conversion versus new underwriting, decided inside the same window. Two people, two clocks, one calendar reminder. Set it today.
